Queeriosity is a performance showcase dedicated to LGBTQ stories and voices in the community. The 2017 Queeriosity event was hosted by Andre Prefontaine, a Canadian triple crown slam poetry champion who is headed to Paris, France this May to rep Canada in the poetry slam World Cup. LGBTQ youth were invited an hour before the doors open to talk and collaborate with each other as well as with Andre.
The event began with Andre sharing a “letter to my teenage self,” and recited one of the first poems he ever wrote.
“Proving you can Houdini out of a straight jacket”
“The ugliest part of a butterfly is its cocoon”
“Use my ashes to build fireworks”
“No matter what you’ve done you can never Diminish the beat of your own drum”
Andre then invited youth poets to take the stage next to share their poems about their experiences with love, family and personal acceptance. The showcase with a message of self-love and acceptance, reminding everyone they are never really alone and to never stop being who they are.
